Back on the road to Tidal River is Darby River, with Darby Beach only 1 km west and, from there, a walking track which leads to Tongue Point, overlooking the coastline. This is a more secluded spot than the main settlement although the safest beach in the park is probably Norman Bay, adjacent to the Tidal River centre.
The Geology 'The Prom' is granite which has weathered in places to form rocky outcrops. Once an island, the promontory is a result of drifting sand accumulating in the sheltered water that separated the island from the mainland.
It is thought this connection occurred about , years ago. The promontory is one of the highest points on a batholith a huge igneous rock deposit which is km long and, at times, 50 km wide and which links Tasmania to the rest of Australia. Around 15, years ago rising sea levels submerged the corridor thus isolating Tasmania and making it an island. Middens along the western coast testify to their seafood diet.
This produced an immediate sealing rush which lasted for over 30 years. It was not mined until World War I. It was shelved after public opposition. There are always more people wanting to stay than there are available accommodation options.
The National Park has camping and caravan sites but only 20 are powered. There is also accommodation at Yanakie, just outside the park. Thanks for your support! Huge beaches with soft sand that literally squishes between your toes? Spectacular viewpoints overlooking the turquoise water? Hiking trails, surf spots and campsites galore? Check, check and check. The well-marked pathways and roads make it easy to get around, and expansive stretches of beach are perfect for finding solitude.
However, it could also have been named Marble or Granite beach, as there are beautiful swirls that look more like a luxe kitchen countertop than an Australian beach. A favourite spot for photographers, surfers, sunbathers and families alike, a pathway shaded by dangling tropical plants leads to the beach, which opens up to the soft golden sand surrounded by huge boulders. Picnic Bay can be accessed via a steep track, and boasts massive rock formations at both ends.
You will be surprised with splendid views from the Sparkes Lookout across to Rodondo Island. This is a Tasmanian island that is shaped like a pyramid! Next stop on your hike are the Lookout Rocks. From here you can see out to Norman Island! At some point you will meet the Darby River track which continues to Tongue Point lookout. There is an additional third walk called Millers Landing Link Track which is good as well. The starting point is here at the Five Mile car park.
This one takes you through some fabulous woodland with great views. Instead of hiking the same way back you can take a turn at Millers Landing Link Track. This 20 minute walk of 1 kilometer will guide you to Millers Landing, the southernmost place where you can find mangroves. It is another walk of just 2 kilometers and takes you about 40 minutes. For the most part, many people only take two to four days to do this trip which is a shame! We do not want you to have a driving holiday! Therefore our staff especially recommend combining or adding together two or more mini road trips. Doing this by the way can save a lot of money on campervan hire from Melbourne. Like most things you hire for example, the longer you book, the cheaper it is! As a result of only doing a short campervan hire road trip, normally you will be paying a higher daily rate.
Therefore we suggestion adding together a couple of exciting short trips to extend the number of days! Therefore the more days you hire the campervan the cheaper the daily rate is. The trail is approx. Picnic Bay is a stunning beach located a short 10 minute drive from the main Tidal River campground.
The beach is often very quiet and has amazing granite rock formations at both ends of the beach to explore. One of the highlights of camping at Tidal River is seeing the local wombats.
