The spirit haunting the puzzle first persuaded Bakura to invoke him by offering him power to undo death, Bakura had lost his sister and his mother in a car crash and agreed to the terms at first not knowing the true nature of the spirit he was allowing to possess him and soon came to regret his decision but his later objections were of no consequence after the spirit was first invoked.
For the bulk of the series Bakura is possessed by an evil spirit and indeed seen less as his normal self than his evil alter-ego. Bakura is considerably skilled in the Duel Monsters game but nowhere close to the level of the spirit that takes him over or Yami Yugi and plays Duel Monsters as little more than an amusing hobby. Bakura's link to the spirit world is a Millennium Puzzle similar to Yugi's but while Yugi's Puzzle alters chance, Bakura's is a divining tool used to located other Millennium items.
While traveling to the past it is hinted at that Bakura himself is the reincarnation of the spirit's first host and thus tied to it. Bakura himself is often well spoken, intelligent and trepidatious but only on a few rare occasions has he actually helped the main cast of heroes.
Towards the very end of the series, Bakura is freed completely from the evil spirit's possession. Once Bakura became aware of the evil nature of the spirit possessing him he is willing to go to any length to foil the spirit going as far as trying to remove his own hand and even allow himself to be killed if it means being free of the spirit and sparing his friends. Because the spirit that possesses Bakura often forgets to eat whenever Bakura regains control of his body after a long bout of possessing his first instinct is always to fill up on food immediately.
Bakura's favorite card is Change Of Heart, a card which allows you to chose one of your opponents monster and use him for one turn. Bakura is good friends with Yugi and the gang, though he hardly hangs around them courtesy of Yami Bakura. Character Guidebook: Millennium Book Tsutomu Kashiwakura Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, 1st half. As long as Dark Necrophia was in the graveyard, Yugi had 5 turns left in the duel to finish it, otherwise he would lose. Note: In the CCG it is different, you need 5 magic cards to assemble to win.
With a quick combo, and one turn left, Yugi manages to summon the god card, Osiris. Currently in the magna, after this duel, Yami Bakura faced Yami Malik in one final duel. The game penalty to the loser would be that whoever lost would disappear forever. Bakura somehow bypasses security and boards the ship to Duelist Kingdom despite not being selected by Maximillion Pegasus to be an official duelist in the tournament. He spends some time with them and they all discuss what their favorite Duel Monsters cards are.
Bakura reveals his favorite card to be " Change of Heart ". Yugi and Bakura agree to a Duel with Yugi's Deck including his friends' favorite cards. Yami Bakura traps Yugi, his friends and the normal Bakura into their favorite Duel Monster cards, leaving Yami Yugi to save his friends lives. Bakura asks Yugi to kill him, as he cannot bear to be controlled by the evil spirit inside his ring.
Bakura as " Change of Heart ". After the incident, Bakura accompanies the group as Yugi and Joey continue to battle through the tournament. Bakura's Ring helps them escape from a cave. Pegasus finds them and traps them in a vision of Ancient Egypt, but Yami Bakura helps them escape.
They return to their beds thinking it was a dream. After a confrontation between the two, Tristan figures out that Bakura is being controlled by an evil spirit in his Millennium Ring, so Tristan throws it out of a window. After the tournament finishes, Bakura regains consciousness. He, along with the rest of the group, returns to school. Yami Bakura takes over and uses his Ring to track down the Puzzle.
When he is taken to an old warehouse, he sees that Yugi is dueling with Bandit Keith , possessed by Marik Ishtar. Yami Bakura tries to break Marik's control over Keith, sending Keith on a rampage where he breaks the Millennium Puzzle. The normal Bakura takes over and knocks Keith back to rescue Yugi. He helps to get back the pieces of the Millenium Puzzle, and Yami Bakura with his ring, possesses one piece of it.
Bakura then returns to school. Bakura explains that he doesn't know how he got the injury, but Marik helps him out, winning the trust of Yugi's friends. Bakura is taken to hospital by Solomon Muto. While Bakura recovers in the hospital, Yami Bakura takes over and escapes by overpowering Solomon. He acquires a Duel Disk and the required number of Locator Cards to enter the finals. Bakura arrives at the quarterfinals, seemingly unaware of his injury.
He ignores everyone's protests that he isn't well enough to duel and boards Kaiba Craft 3 where the duels are taking place. When asked how he made it to the finals, he tells his friends that he acquired the Locator Cards himself, but doesn't go into details on how he got them.
